linking not working on first build, working on second build

Basically - if I don't have the object files and make has to compile them I
get an error message when linking (even though the .o files get compiled
during this build). When I have the .o files (running make for the second
time), there is no problem. Is there some problem with latency writing the
files to the disc, or am I doing something wrong?
