function pointer is not initializing to NULL

With your statement you will not dereference the function pointer, but 
interpret its location as call to a function.

I would prefer using something like:

if (NULL != retrievalFunc) {
   return ((* retrievalFunc)(attName, dataBuf, codePtr, msg));
}
