how to cast away 'volatile'?

Since const_cast is not supported in C, and I am writing in C, that 
seems likely. :-)

I think at some point I actually asked 'what is the C equivalent of 
const_cast<>' (but I'm not sure if I actually posted that or just 
thought it...).
