Comparison failure Comiling 4.2 svn on RedHat EL-3

Suppose for some reason I wish not to install Red Hat 4 or some other
system, so the first obvious solution is not available.

I tried building 4.2 from svn on a Red Hat EL3 (Dell PowerEdge 2600
Intel P4 2.8) and obtained a comparison error between stage2 and stage3.
Any help, or pointers to other info I missed finding?
