compiling instrinstics

When the tree data structure is expanded into RTL, each call to a
recognized intrinsic function is replaced with one or more RTL
instructions.  A single RTL instruction roughly corresponds to a
single assembly language instruction.

(This answer only applies to gcc 4.0 and later).
