problem building gcc on ia64-hpux machine

I'm not the expert to tell you "why" but after struggling for some  
hours on the same OS i can tell you how it works for me compiling  
gcc-4.2.2 :

../configure --prefix=/opt/gcc-4.2.2 --with-gnu-as  
--with-as=/usr/local/bin/gnu-as --without-gnu-ld  
--with-ld=/usr/ccs/bin/ld --disable-nls --enable-threads=posix  
--enable-languages=c,c++

We also do "export LANG=C" before configure to prevent trouble and you  
should use the GNU sed/awk or you may get "stack growth error" at some  
point of the build. For the binutils on Itanium we have to use "export  
LEXLIB=" "" to prevent errors at link stage.
We have finally managed to get gcc compile on Solaris 7, Solaris 9,  
AIX 5.3, HPUX 11.11 (PA) and HPUX 11.23 (IA64).
The last one was the worst BTW.

BTW : Does anyone have experince how good GCC is on optimizing for Itanium??
