assembler not found

I have installed g77 (3.4.1-1) with the help of fink as binary package 
on my ibook with mac os x 10.3.9.

When I run the compilation command g77 I get an error message with the 
following content:

g77: installation problem, cannot exec `as': No such file or directory

It seems, that the assembler was not installed propperly, I can't find 
'as' in the sw-file (standard installation-file for fink) either.

Can you help me?

I would be honestly grateful for any kind of helpful advise!
