gcc wants file osfas on Alpha platform

Any ideas how to resolve this situation?:

# gcc test.c
as: Error: can't find or exec: /usr/lib/cmplrs/cc/osfas
: No such file or directory

(the directory does exist, but the file osfas does not - what is it? how do
it find its way to the platform (Alpha 5.0 or 5.1a, or 5.1b)?
