Steps required for gcc compilation..

Hi,
I am new to compiling gcc. Can anyone point me what
are exact steps to compile gcc my-self.

What is difference while cross-compiling it for
AMD64/IA64.
And which library/component is responsible for
generating format i.e. ELF or PE-COFF.
