multiline string constant

Help!

Is there any way to resurrect multiline string constants???
A patch?  A flag to turn on old options?
Lack of it:
    1)  breaks thousands of lines of my code,
    2)  makes it _MUCH_ more difficult to edit multiline strings,
    3)  make the code look messy.
I have looked through the documentation but have found nothing
(a search function would be helpful).
