solaris 8 build gcc 3.2.3 fails - any help appreciated

I see. Yes, gcc 3.3 does have a problem with gtkmm.
Well, in that case 3.2.3 is probably your best option.
Question: do you need java? If not, try building gcc
3.2.3 without is (--enable-languages=c,c++,f77,objc).
That should avoid the errors in the boehm garbage
collector. The alternative is to try to find the patch
which fixes the issue on 3.3 and apply it yourself,
but that's probably more trouble than it's worth.
