weak and alias

In gcc 2.X the pragma 

#pragma weak aliasname = realname
worked both for functions, and variables. 

In gcc 3.2.x the pragma no longer seem to work, and you can't alias a
variable with __attribute__. 
Is there anyway to re-enable the old pragma functionality?
