A problem about -fprofile-arcs -ftest-coverage

Hi everyone,
  I followed the guide of  'Building a Modern MIPS Cross-Toolchain for
Linux' to build my gcc toolchain, but  compiled programs by the new gcc with
-fprofile-arcs -ftest-coverage options generate 'gmon.out' file instead of
'.da' files. As I know the 'gmon.out' file is for profiling not for coverage
testing. What's the problem? Could you give a clue?

PS. 
  The versions of the tools are listed blow,
  binutils-2.13 release
  gcc-3.2 release
  glibc-2.2.5 release plus linuxthreads
