Problem with ar?

Sirs,

I have a number of .o files which work fine and can be linked. I want to put
them in a library. I use "ar rs libname.a *.o". This produces a file with
the .o files embedded. "ar t libname.a" produces a list of the archived
files. "nm libname.a" produces a list of the embedded files but reports that
it does not know the format. (nm does this with libc.a also.)

When I run "ln" it reports that there is no index in the archive.

Do you have any idea what is wrong?
