Actually, there should be C ABI compatibility - but only if the compiler is 
configured in the same way (there are some strange options that could break 
backwards compatibilty, IIRC), and ou use the same version of all the 
dynamically linked libraries.

I don't know if 2.96 has it, but GCC 3.x has a runtime support library 
(libgcc ?) that could cause problems.
Again, try -static and hope.
