__multi3 intrinsic

GCC 2.96 has intrinsic '__multi3'.
It appears when I'm trying to compile following example:
-----test.c-----------
void f()
{
    int a=2;
    char b[a*2];
}
----end of test.c-----


Here is a piece of symbol table for test.o:

Is this intrinsic used in GCC 3.2 ?
Why GCC 2.96 uses it ?
