packaging up the build

In the past, I've put together tarballs of gcc by touching a file
somewhere, then doing a make install, and tarring up any files newer
than the file I touched in say, /usr/local. Primitive, but it generally
works. Is there anything that comes with the source for doing this? I
pawed through the Makefile for a while, but didn't see anything obvious.
