Prerequisites?

I have glibc 1.00 on my system.  I am trying to upgrade to glibc2.3 (or
newest version).  The doc for the new version of glibc states that I need
gcc v 3.2 and I have 2.95.3.  Anyway, when trying to compile gcc 3.2 I get
an error message that some files could not be found, and I downloaded the
tarball from the official GNU page.
