recommendation for binutils version ? ( GCC 3.1 on Linux)

Hi there,

I just want to build GCC 3.1 on Linux (i686, glibc 2.2.4 Kernel 2.4.16) and 
downloaded binutils 2.12.90.0.7 which seem to be the latest from 
ftp.kernel.org

Is this version of binutils okay for Linux or is any other better ?
