3.1.0 failed to install libstdc++-v3 includes

On solaris 8:

In directory ........./sparc-sun-solaris2.8/sparcv9/libstdc++-v3/include

make install reports 

/bin/sh: ../../../../gcc-3.1/libstdc++-v3/../install-sh: not found

for every file it attempts to install.

I've tracked this down to the value of INSTALL being over-riden from 
../../../../../gcc-3.1/libstdc++-v3/../install-sh
to
../../../../gcc-3.1/libstdc++-v3/../install-sh

but don't know why, or what the solution should be (yet).

Anyone have the same problem?

Is there a fix?
