When you bootstrap gcc, it does 4 things:
1) build gcc with the system compiler (1st stage)
2) build gcc with the 1st stage gcc built compiler
3) build gcc with the 2nd stage gcc built compiler
4) compares 2nd and 3rd stage built compilers, to ensure that everything is 
working fine.

I've read in this list that the HP assembler embeds time stamps in the .o 
files, so they ALWAYS look diferent.

I don't know if it is possible to disable this in the HP assembler, or to 
tell gcc not to care about this.
The alternative would be to build and use GNU binutils (assembler, linker, 
etc.), which don't have this problem.
