Cygwin / GCC

Out of curiousity, I'm wondering if you have ever built gcc anywhere other
than cygwin. 
It should be as simple as the above and, in my experience, it usually is. 
In theory, cygwin is supposed to make things as easy to build on Windows as
on UNIX. 
However, if you've never built anything on UNIX this distinction isn't too
helpful. 



I have done some playing with it on the SGI / IRIX.  It was non-trivial, but
whether that was the
inherent level of difficulty or as a result of significant operator density,
I am too blasted
stupid to tell.

In general, you are right, for most things I have tried on Cygwin

./configure
make
make check
make install

works like a champ. Virtually Ph.D. proof!  I am fully anticipating that
there will be a problem of the nature that "well, duh, why didn't I know
that directory had to be in my path, it says right there".  When the
eureka light comes on I promise to write a step-by-step for dummies
version for all to see.
