Question about mixing GCC 3.1.1 and GCC 2.95.3

I was just wondering if it is possible to generate C/C++ code (e.g. dynamic
libraries with GCC 3.1.1) and then run them from executables generated
with GCC 2.95.3. I seem to be getting core dumps when trying this.

Just wondering why the two compilers are not interchangeable. Is this
true for only C++ generated code or both C and C++ generated code.
