gcc refuses to run

Installed gcc 3.0.4 (with related packages, including
g++).

Both gcc and g++ refuse to run:

$ g++ test.cpp
g++: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GCC_3.0' not found
(required by g++)
$ 

Here are my versions:

$ rpm -q gcc gcc-c++ libgcc libstdc++ libstdc++-devel 
        
gcc-3.0.4-2
gcc-c++-3.0.4-2
libgcc-3.0.4-2
libstdc++-2.96-81
libstdc++-3.0.4-2
libstdc++-devel-3.0.4-2
$

I am running Red Hat 7.1

Any suggestions?
