gcc install advice

Thanks for the help bjorn.  

I went to replace the links in /usr/bin as you
advised, but as you can see below on my redhat system
they werent links.  Would It be okay to replace the
files there with symbolic links?  Would this have any
adverse affects?

[root@envy bin]# pwd
/usr/bin
[root@envy bin]# ls gcc -l
-rwxr-xr-x    2 root     root        78892 Sep  4 
2001 gcc

You also mentiond that I might want to re-compile a
few other things.  Are there any other things in
particular that you would recomend re-compiling?  All
I am looking to do with this system is complile
Apache, MySQL and PHP, and then use this system to
start learning C and C++ a little.
