Accessing file descriptors in fstream (g++ 3.0.1)

Hi gcc-gurus,
gcc-3.0 doesn't allow you to get file descriptors if you use ofstream. Is 
there any work around to get file descriptors?
I have seen this message posted by several people, but there is no answer so 
far.

Did any one get a way out of it?
