gcc 3.0/3.0.1 build fails on redhat 7.1/ia64

on a new install to an empty drive, redhat 7.1 release, binutils
2.11.2 built on the box, gcc-core + gcc-g++ fail to build using the
same config options as an identically configured rh7.1 ia32 box that
built successfully (obviously the platform is different, but I let the
config take care of that part).

is this a known issue or is it my problem? I've built 3.0 and 3.0.1
with no problem with several different sets of configuration options,
e.g. threads or not, etc., with never a problem, and I built 3.0 on
the turbolinux beta for ia64.

any suggestions?

thanks
dxc
