question regarding __builtin_va_list

Hi,
   Could someone tell me whether __builtin_va_list is an internal type 
defined by gcc? I am using version 2.96 of the compiler and am unable to 
find where __builtin_va_list is defined. The problem I face is that I want 
to be able to process C++ files that may include gcc specific headers like 
stdarg.h using a frontend other than the gcc front end.
