Configure won't recognize my host system

I would love to have a full install of all the latest compilers in GCC
running on my machine. A PowerMacintosh 6500/300 with NetBSD 1.5
installed.  I downloaded the source for 2.95 last week.

When I tried to run configure the output was:

Configuring for a macppc-unknown-netbsd1.5 host.
Invalid configuration `macppc-unknown-netbsd1.5': machine `macppc-unknown' not recognized
Invalid configuration `macppc-unknown-netbsd1.5': machine `macppc-unknown' not recognized
Unrecognized host system name macppc-unknown-netbsd1.5.

Some other configure scripts come up with "powerpc-apple-netbsdelf1.5"
or "macppc-netbsd1.5" and proceeded happily. There seems to be a
bootstrap option which could do more to determine my environment, but
seems to require that the makefile already exists. 

How do I proceed. It seems that some software I wish to use (OpenJade)
is written to expect a newer compiler than the one installed
(egcs-1.1.2), though that compiler should be sufficient for building a
newer compiler.
