Problems building gcc for arc

Hi

I am trying to build gcc-2.95.3 as a cross-compiler for an embedded ARC target on a pc-linux host. (Formerly, I have already built binutils-2.11 for the same target & with the same prefix option).
Unfortunately the assembler fails whith libgcc1.S giving the message:
	Error: Unkonwn pseudo-op:  `.cpu'
Anyone can help?
By the way, is it the right place to make this question?
