libgcc.a on HPUX

I posted a question here a few weeks ago about problems building a 
shared library (I am basically trying to compile the Crypt::SSLeay 
perl module). I was told that the problem was the fact that libgcc.a 
was not a shared library, yet someone else told me that if I linked 
against gcc it should automatically pull in the required routines.

I am using HP-UX 10.20, gcc-2.8.1.

Can someone please answer the following questions (of a non C 
programmer):

1. where does gcc look for libgcc when I have -lgcc on my compile 
command line.
2. if -lgcc does not cause it to link to gcc what do I need to do to 
get it to link to gcc
3. would upgrading to gcc-2.95.3 solve my problems?
4. is there an archive for this list somewhere (www.gnu.org links to 
gcc.gnu.org which I cannot connect to).
