question about config.sub

Hi,Everybody:
   i have a question about config.sub.
   when building gcc as a cross-compiler, i use "config.sub" to see if 
the "i686-aout" configuration option is supported by Glibc2.0.6. the result
is that config.sub outputs "i686-pc-aout",meaning it accepts "i686-aout".
but i think that "i686-aout" means the a.out binary format,not ELF. and i 
hear somebody said glibc only support ELF. then here is a conflict,how 
explain this? anybody can tell me why?  THANKS in advance!
