gcc compiling problems

Greetings!

OS- Solaris x86 v.7
gcc-2.8.1-sol7-intel-local.pkg - package installed

I'm having trouble compiling with gcc. In all of my ./configure scripts it 
checks that I have gcc which works fine but it cuts out early complaining 
that gcc cannot create executables. In the config.log it says "no as found" 
--assembler I am guessing. Has anyone else had this problem, or know a work 
around.
