Bootstrap failure: objdir=srcdir, FreeBSD make

Bingo! I was using FreeBSD make. With GNU make, it all compiled perfectly. 

Thank you *so* much for all of your help! It's people like you who truly
exemplify the ideals of the Open Source movement.
