Problem compiling freetype

"string" is no longer in the global namespace, you should either write
std::string everywhere, or
add "using" keywords before the first use (e.g. "using std::string;" or
"using namespace std;").

When i am trying to compile freetype using gcc-3.0
in ttkmkfdir2 directory
the following error is coming

libtool --mode=compile g++ -Wall -pedantic -I../freetype-pre1.4/lib/. -ggdb
-o ttmkfdir.o -c ttmkfdir.cpp
rm -f .libs/ttmkfdir.lo
g++ -Wall -pedantic -I../freetype-pre1.4/lib/. -ggdb -c ttmkfdir.cpp  -fPIC

make: *** [ttmkfdir.o] Error 1

Whats wrong here
