I can't install gcc

The short version:

enter a temporary directory somewhere outside the source tree:
% mkdir /tmp/gcc-build && cd /tmp/gcc-build
configure it:
% /path/to/gcc-source/configure
build it:
% make bootstrap
install it:
% make install
