Permissions problem?

Hello, I installed the gcc-2.95.3-sol7-sparc-local package on my Solaris 7
box with whatever Sun's latest 7_Recommended patches were as of 4/9/01.

The gcc package itself seems to have installed properly.  However, when I
try to do a ./configure on another package I'd like to install, I get the
following message when the configure checks to see if the compiler works:

checking whether the C compiler (gcc  ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables.

I tried using gcc-2.95.2 on this, and received the same result.  I was
hoping (perhaps beyond hope) that 2.95.3 would cure it.  No luck though.
I'm attempting to run the configure as root.  I made sure gcc is in the
path statement.  I know what I'm trying to accomplish, and I understand the
compile process somewhat.  However, I'm not sure where to start looking for
the base problem on this issue, since the error message is so terse.

Has anybody run into this problem before?
