Has anyone ever recompiled GCC with '-malign-double'?

Dear List,
     I am attempting to recompile GCC (including all its libraries) from
scratch with the '-malign-double' option.  To do this, I passed the
following to configure:

--enable-cxx-flags='-malign-double'

Hoewever, configure seems to have ignored this, and it compiles everything
normally, without '-malign-double'.  Can anyone tell me what I'm doing
wrong?  I'm compiling on Redhat 6.2, kernel 2.2.16-3 smp, dual PIII, GCC
2.95.3.
