Building gcc on Mac OS X Public Beta?

Has anyone been successful in building gcc on Mac OS X? The OS X PB release doesn't include a basic set of developer tools, but one site ( http://www.macaddict.com/content/news/2000/09/13/18709 ) gives instructions on replacing omitted tools allowing you to restore the basic C compiler. I believe the core of the Mac OS, "Darwin," is a variant of FreeBSD developed for/by Apple as the core of the new Mac OS.

Any guess on the closest target as a starting point? NextStep?

Thanks, Barrett
