What is the variable ASM_FILE_START?

I am attempting to build gcc2.95.2 on a Digital Unix 5.0 box.

I ran configure with no option
and then 
make bootstrap

But I got an
Unresolved:
ASM_FILE_START 

during the ld phase. (Using DU 5.0 ld)

What is the variable ASM_FILE_START? 
What should it be set to?
