GCC 2.95.2 on Redhat 6.2 with latest binutils -- a lot of problems

This is something strange. I have VIA MVP4 chipset with an AMD K6-2 500 cpu and I got SIG11 all the time, trying to compile a kernel and gcc2.95.2 I was told that it's a hardware problem, but BSD and Windows have 0 problems. This is probably the 5th post I've seen here about compilers having signal 11 running linux on AMD+VIA hardware. I have switched from redhat to TurboLinux and so far had had no problems. I think some variable in compiler or version is what screwing it up.
Just my 2 cents.
