gprof question (fwd)

I am finding that the timing that gprof gives me is quite
a bit less than what is shown when I run "ps -a".
Is this because gprof doesn't keep time of memory swapping?
Or what could be the reason "ps -a" is much larger than
the total time gprof gives me?
