building gcc 2.95.2 - unresolved references to nonlocal_goto_handler_slots in stmt.c

I am trying to build gcc 2.95.2 on an i586 machine and the build fails near the end while linking due to unresolved references to nonlocal_goto_handler_slots in stmt.c.  

I am trying to get from a Linux Mandrake 6.0 installation to:

Kernel 2.2.16
Binutils 2.10.1
Gcc 2.95.2

I did something similar in the past on another similar PC but can not recall the sequence of steps that I used to make it work.   I have tried many things this time to no avail.  Can someone suggest the proper sequence of steps?
