gcc for hitachi processors

hello to all,

I have just now started using gcc for compiling programs for the hitachi H8/300 series processor on windows 98 platform. 
Since i just now installed it i thought of testing it with a small program.

	int a,b;

	a = 3;
	b = a+5;

}


I compiled it but it is giving me errors as follows 

c:\windows\temp\ccgCeWBK.s:9: Error: invalid character '.' in opcode

and similar errors in line 10,11,13,14,15,17.

As is visible from the listing there is a '.' character in the opcode (mov . l ) in line 9 and in other lines also..... 

Can someone please throw some light on this problem...
