gcc won't compile (or can't install) on hp-ux 11.0

I attempted twice to install gcc on the following machine:

Machine    :    HP Model 9000/712/66
OS         :    HP-UX B 11.0

I installed gcc using HP's "swinstall" command. Everything
went well. I clicked "Done" (on the gui) to complete the install.
Then I tried to run a simple program and received this error:

as: "/var/tmp/ccrovZAa.s", line 22: error 1052: Directive name not
recognized - NSUBSPA

The program simply prints 'Hello' - see for yourself

	#include <stdio.h>
	int main()
	{
	  printf ( "\nHello\n" );
	}

I then tried to compile gcc (2.95.1). The configure went
well, but the 'make' aborts with this error message. Please note that
lcal is my symbolic link for /usr/local/bin. As you can see below,
the 'configure.in' file does exist! [This behavior (not being able
to find files in the same dir) happened before - the gcc install
said it couldn't find bison. So I included /usr/local/bin in root's
$PATH.] Error message follows:

Configuring in /usr/local/bin/gcc/libio
../.././libio not found
/lcal/gcc-2.95.1/configure[589]: /lcal/gcc-2.95.1/gcc/version.c: Cannot 
find or open the file.
grep: can't open ./configure.in
*** ./configure.in has no "per-host:" line.
grep: can't open ./configure.in
*** Error exit code 1
 
Stop.

So I did an ls and you can plainly see that configure.in exists.
