cannot install gcc at all : problems with dummy.c

Hello :
I am still not able to install gcc.
This is the sequence. I downloaded .tar.gz file for binutils. I ran
"./configure".
I could not run "make install". It gives an error saying that only
super-user (root) has
write permissions for /opt directory. So it can't create /opt/binutils.
So I ran just "make" instead.

Then I tried installing gcc on hp unix 11, using the relevant .tar.gz file.

I ran "./configure" in directory {SERVER_PATH}/gcc-2.95.2 ; Then I ran "make
install".
This process runs for about 15 minutes. Then it gives the following error :

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
        echo "void __foo () {}" > dummy.c

    /export/home/nani/gcc/gcc-2.95.2/gcc/xgcc -B/export/home/nani/gcc/gcc-2.
95.2/gcc/ -B/opt/gcc/hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11.00/bin/ -I/opt/gcc/hppa2.0w-hp-hpux1

/include -DIN_GCC -DHAIFA -I./include -c dummy.c
as: "/var/tmp/ccWFBx6b.s", line 14: error 1052: Directive name not
recognized -
NSUBSPA
*** Error exit code 1

Stop.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----

There is one file named "as" in directory /usr/ccs/bin .
And there is one "as" in {SERVER_ROOT}/gcc-2.95.2/gcc dir also.

The command "ls -l ./gcc-2.95.2/gcc/as" shows this result :
----------------------------------------------------------------------
lrwx--x--x 1 nani staff 20 Aug 4 16:54
gcc/gcc-2.95.2/gcc/as
-> /opt/binutils/bin/as
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This means that gcc installation expects that binutils have been installed
before. And that there is a dir named /opt/binutils/bin . The funnier thing
is that binutils installation produces no file named "as".

PLEASE PLEASE HELP. If I run just "make", instead of "make install" I get
the same error.
If you know the answer, please do let me know your phone # also. I think I
can solve the problem fast if I could talk to you about it.
