gcc versus g++/c++

Hi,
 
Is there any fundamental differences between gcc and 
g++/c++?
 
When we tried to compile a simple C++ program that uses 
iostream, we needed to include -lstdc++ for gcc but this seems to be 
automatically done for g++. Is this normal?
