make command question

Is there a way to get the GNU make command to accept blanks in a
subdirectory name?

make --directory="C:\AB CD\output" --makefile="C:\AB CD\my.makefile"

I tried the double quotes (which seems to work for most other programs) but
GCC make croaks with
make: *** "C:\AB: No such file or directory. Stop.

Thx in advance,
