linker error on HP 11.0

I am trying to create a shared library on HP-UX
11.0 using gcc to compile the source and ld to
link and create the shared library and I receive
the following error:

ld: DP relative code in file /opt/gnu/lib/libg++.a
(String.o) - shared library must be position
    independent.  Use +z or +Z to recompile.
*** Error exit code 1

Does anybody know how to get rid of this error?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.
