Stupid gcc/egcs questions

I recently picked up the gcc-2.95 distro and had a question re the
gcc/egcs connection.

According to the faq, both gcc2 and egcs had some parallel development.
When running RH6, gcc --version yields egcs-2.91.xx. After compiling
gcc-2.95 and using it's gcc --version yields gcc-2.95 as expected.

My questions are:
*) when I pick up gcc-2.95 is that egcs?
*) assuming I gcc-2.95 ~= egcs-2.yy how does one replace the current
gcc shipped w/RH6? Just replace the executables and by setting
configure --prefix=/usr instead of the default /usr/local? Or should
I wait for RH to put together some gcc-2.95 rpm's?

I'm a little concerned with linking to the correct dynamic libraries by
just using the compiled gcc-2.95 in the /usr/local/bin directory.

This stuff is prob in a faq, but I haven't found it.

Thanks,
Steve
